Pete's Grill and Tavern, 2588 84th Street SW, Byron Center ~ October 28, 2025

You don't have to worry about whether to enter from the front or the back because the restaurant won't let you enter in the front 😊
So around the back we went. After a small hallway we found two dining rooms, one that included the bar and that's the space we wanted. It looked cozy and comfortable with some really cool ceiling lamps.
There is lots of fun and informative signage everywhere.
We started with a Salted Carmel Porter, and Boston Lager, an Old Fashioned, and a Bud. The Bud came in a large aluminum bottle and tasted like college 😉 We were all happy with our choices.
Our appetizers were the Tavern Pickles with Ranch, and Pizza Puffs with Beer Cheese and Tomato Sauce.  Dill pickle spears, ham, and swiss cheese are wrapped in egg roll skins and deep fried - artfully constructed and pretty, pretty good.
We also enjoyed the fluffy fried dough balls, aka Pizza Puffs.
Some appetizers were just $6.00 during Happy Hour which is an excellent value.
Three of us went for the much promoted burgers. The Olive Burger (homemade olive spread, American cheese, tomato and lettuce) was juicy and delicious. The Bleu Jameson (Jameson whiskey glaze, bleu cheese crumbles, tavern cheese and haystack onions) was a bit messy but had great balanced flavor. The 84th Street was served with American cheese pickles, onion, lettuce and thousand island dressing. Another messy one but so tasty! (I'm missing one burger picture but trust me, you need to stop in and enjoy one.) All three had a nice char.
Most local watering holes will not ask you how you want your burger done and even fewer are capable of presenting a medium-rare if requested. Pete's is a wonderful exception: the two ordered medium-rare were just that and the third burger ordered medium was also perfect.
One burger was ordered with chips instead of fries but was served with fries. Five minutes later, the house-made chips arrived.
Our fourth dish was Fish and Chips, beer battered cod fillets served with fries, cole slaw, and tartar sauce. Lightly deep-fried, it was well prepared and delicious.
One of us asked for hot sauce for the fries and were brought some in a plastic cup and charged 50 cents for it. That was a little weird and there's also a 3% surcharge on all orders so be prepared for that. The surcharge does not go to your server so tip generously.
We were ably served by Hannah who was not only friendly and efficient but also informative and helpful.
This is a photo of the other dining room, not nearly as nice as the one we were in 😊
There are some vintage photos in the hallway.
There's an outdoor patio in the summer and large doors that open.
Pete's Tavern is over 75 years old (originally called Pete's Place) and was purchased by a restaurant group, 4GR8 (President and Founder, Jeff Lobdell) in 2017. They own 14 brands and 21 locations but do not turn their restaurants into chains. The restaurants retain their local flavor and Pete's is no exception.
There are 12 TVs, a quiet soundtrack, great atmosphere and a very welcoming and charming vibe. The building may be non-descript on the outside but do yourself a favor and stop in. Just don't try to use the front door.
